Oliver Goldsmith (1730-1774), the renowned poet, witnessed the demolition of an old village and its farms to be made into a wealthy person's garden. The poet was very concerned that ruining villages will destroy peasantry. He wrote The Deserted Village with these thoughts. It is a fictional village `Sweet Auburn', the poet does not disclose the real name, but states that it is 50 miles (80 kilometers) from London. The village is believed to be Nuneham Courtenay, which was demolished by Simon Harcourt.Product details
